Shine Scholars programme providing greater access to higher education

Senator Micheál Carrigy this week attended the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Athlone Campus for the launch of the Shine Scholars programme, an initiative aimed at providing greater access to higher education for students with intellectual disabilities.

This significant development is part of TUS's ongoing commitment to inclusivity and support for the PATH 4 initiative.

Senator Carrigy met with TUS President Professor Vincent Cunnane and Vice President for Student Education and Experience Frances O'Connell.

The Shine Scholars programme is set to offer enhanced educational opportunities, ensuring that students with intellectual disabilities can thrive within the university environment.

The introduction of the Shine Scholars programme has been made possible through additional investment announced by Taoiseach Simon Harris TD and Minister for Further and Higher Education Patrick O'Donovan. This funding will enable TUS to expand its services and support across its regions, furthering its mission to make higher education accessible to all.

Senator Carrigy commented, “It has been an honour to work with TUS and witness their dedication to creating an inclusive educational environment. The Shine Scholars programme is an excellent initiative that will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of many students.

“Last year I also attended the opening of new quiet spaces for autistic students at TUS, demonstrating their dedication to creating a supportive and accommodating environment for all students.”
