Not surprisingly, Dympna Cunniffe’s Fianna Fáil party colleagues, Joe Flaherty and Robert Troy, were the biggest beneficiaries from the distribution of her 546 votes during Count 5 in the Longford Westmeath General Election 2024.

Flaherty gained 173 votes, with Troy receiving 110 votes and another to benefit substantially was Independent Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran who received 99 votes from the Cunniffe distribution.

Fine Gael’s Tanya Cannon (658 votes) has now been eliminated and her votes will be distributed during Count 6.

There are now 13 candidates left in the contest to fill four seats and the leading five contenders are;

Robert Troy, Fianna Fáil 8,481

Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, Independent 8,237

Micheál Carrigy, Fine Gael 7,251

Sorca Clarke, Sinn Féin 7,072

Joe Flaherty, Fianna Fáil 5,429

Troy is still 1,834 votes shy of the 10,315 quota so it may be quite some time before a second candidate is declared officially elected.

Paul Hogan (Independent Ireland) 3,030, Barry Campion (Sinn Féin) 2,370 and Gerry Warnock (Independent) 2,288 are the next three candidates in the poll. placeholder image
