A 26-year-old man accused of holding a meat cleaver to his flatmate’s neck during an alleged assault is due to be served with the Book of Evidence next month.
Appearing before Judge Vincent Deane at a recent sitting of Longford District Court, Walter Fernandes with an address of Apartment 4, Weavers Hall, Longford is charged with having produced a weapon, namely a meat cleaver, while allegedly committing the offence of assault causing harm on December 5 2025 at apartment 4, Weavers Hall.

Mr Fernandes is also charged with having committed an assault with intent to cause bodily harm on the same date and location.
Outlining the facts of the case for the purpose of jurisdiction, Sgt Mark Mahon told the court, “This incident occurred on the December 5, 2025 at 12 midnight approx. Gardaí were called to an apartment block where a male had been assaulted by his flatmate. He was armed with a knife, Judge.”
It was at this point Sgt Mahon produced for the court a photograph of the weapon.
Sgt Mahon continued, “When Gardaí went there, they spoke to the injured party who outlined what happened. The suspected offender assaulted him by putting his hands around his neck and pushing him back. He also described how the suspected offender held a meat cleaver to his neck and pushed him to the ground, allegedly stood over him and that he attempted to stand on him. He kicked him in the upper arm and chest.”

The sergeant said it was at this stage that two flatmates intervened and attempted to hold back the suspected offender at which point he moved into the bedroom.
Sgt Mahon explained, “The suspected offender moved into the bedroom before returning a short time later when he began to assault and grab the injured party by the collar, throwing him up against the wall and started banging his head against the wall three or four times. The injured party received cuts to his inner limb and no hospital treatment was needed...”
Intervening, Judge Deane refused jurisdiction in the matter, meaning the case would be sent to a higher court for further proceedings.
The Book of Evidence will now be served on July 7.
