A man has appeared in court charged with breaking into St Christopher’s, Longford in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Derek Hickey (37), with an address at Shangan Crescent, Ballymun, Dublin 9, appeared before Judge Ciaran Liddy at a special sitting of Carrick-on-Shannon District Court following a number of incidents in Longford town.

He was charged with one count of burglary at St Christopher’s at 2.45am on Thursday morning, one count of criminal damage to a vehicle by attempting to start it shortly afterwards, and one count of theft from Aldi, Longford on Wednesday evening.

Mr Hickey also faces two charges of trespassing at Aughatoom House, Battery Road, and a property at Druid Glen, White Linen Woods.

A bench warrant issued from Carlow District Court for a charge of public intoxication was also executed.

Gardaí objected to bail under O’Callaghan Rules due to the seriousness of the charges and the evidence against Mr Hickey in all five charges.

CCTV footage showed the suspect entering St Christopher’s where a number of electrical items, including a laptop, were taken, the total value of which was €1,200.

When the accused was apprehended around 7am on Thursday morning, he was found to be in possession of the stolen property.

Mr Hickey was remanded in custody with consent to bail on his own bond of €750. He will reappear on Tuesday, June 3, before Longford District Court.
