Man who collided with car travelling on N55 fined at Longford District Court

A retired man who pleaded guilty to careless driving was fined €300 at Longford District Court. Hugh Batrim (67) of Corrnagun, Keshcarrigan, Leitrim was before Judge Bernadette Owens arising from an incident on June 6, 2022, at Ballinrud, Granard, Longford.
Sergeant Mark Mahon said the matter before the court arose when the defendant drove without due care and attention as he exited a private driveway.
As the defendant came out of the driveway he collided with a car travelling on the N55, because he did not see the vehicle approach.
The defendant was represented in proceedings by solicitor Anthony Feeney. Mr Feeney told the court his client is a retiree.
The legal representative said Mr Batrim had checked both ways before he came out onto the road, but felt that the other vehicle was moving at such a speed that he did not see it in time.
Mr Feeney said as the defendant's wife is ill Mr Batrim did not want to contest the matter.
Taking the facts into consideration Judge Owens registered a conviction and imposed a fine of €300 with four months to pay.
