The action was at times hair-raising on a busy day of competition today in the Juvenile Pentathlon at the National Indoor Combined Events. Thirteen Longford athletes were among the large entry taking part in 60m Hurdles, High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put and 800m in Athlone. Highlight of the day was Sophia Carey putting together excellent performances across the events which saw her only narrowly miss out on an Under-14 bronze medal when finishing fourth. Sophia’s total score of 2365 was just 33 points behind third and included top-3 placings in the hurdles and 800m. READ MORE BELOW PHOTO Another highlight was Kevin Og Murphy recording the longest throw for the shot put in the Under-15 boys event. Alisha Manning was among the Longford AC entry who each gave it their all during an energy-sapping few hours of multi-events, as did Darcey Brady, Sophia Carey, Cara Davis, Kelly Davis, Oisín Dillon, Aibhe Foley, Mia Kiernan, Alisha Manning, Sinead Masterson, Rian McCaffrey, Leah McVeigh, Robin Og Murphy and Kevin Og Murphy. Well done to all with a number of PB’s recorded on Saturday and all will have gained great experience which they can bring towards the upcoming Connacht Indoors. Full credit also to coaches John Fitzpatrick and Paul Grealy for their excellent work with the athletes over the past two months as the recently-opened Longford Athletics Club indoor centre greatly helped with preparations.placeholder image
