A non-mainstream educational facility has made an application to Longford County Council planners for permission to develop a school near Kenagh.

CLG Midhe Democratic School has made the application for a change of use of an existing residential dwelling for community education use.

If developed the building, which was formerly Barry Stores, will consist of three classrooms and ancillary facilities.

The change of use will entail essential repairs, internal alterations, replacement of the existing septic tank with a proprietary treatment system and all associated site works. The property address is Barry, Keenagh, Longford.

The Midhe Democratic School is a “self-directed” learning environment for students aged 5 to 18 years old. The school is founded on the six principles of Trust, Respect, Freedom, Responsibility, Equality and Inclusion.

The local authority received the application last week and have indicated that they should reach a decision by November 08, 2023.

If approved the school plans to open in January 2024 with 20 students. The provisions are to grow this number to 50 students within five years.
