The solicitor of a defendant charged in connection with a violent incident in Longford town has asked to be moved from the prison he is currently on remand in “for his own safety”.
David Joyce (28) of 35 Palace Crescent, Ardnacassa, Longford, appeared at Longford District Court via videolink last week. The defendant had a black eye.
Mr Joyce, one of two defendants charged in connection with a violent incident that took place on a busy morning outside a school, appeared before Judge Bernadette Owens at the sitting.
Martin Keenan (34) of 81 Ardnacassa Avenue, Longford was the first defendant to appear by videolink from Castlerea in connection with the allegations.
The defendant is charged with production of an article, a shovel, while committing violent disorder and assault at Deanscurragh, Longford at 9:30am on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
Sgt Mark Mahon for the State said the Director of Public Prosecution was asking for a short adjournment to determine direction.
Mr Keenan, represented in proceedings by solicitor Brid Mimnagh, was remanded in custody to appear before judge Owens on November 5, next.
Later David Joyce (28) of 35 Palace Crescent, Ardnacassa, Longford, who is charged with violent disorder and count of producing a shovel and red handled screener, appeared by videolink from Cloverhill.
Sgt Mahon said the persecution was awaiting directions from the DPP. Solicitor Brid Mimnagh asked the judge if it was possible to transfer Mr Joyce to Castlerea “for his own personal safety and proximity to family” adding that it was “obvious from the look of him” that he was having issues in Cloverhill.
Adjourning the matter to November 5 judge Owens said that she would make a recommendation on the warrant that the Mr Joyce “if possible” be moved to Castlera “for personal safety and proximity to family.”
