Four candidates elected on the first count in the Longford LEA

Long serving Fianna Fail councillor Seamus Butler has been around politics a good while.

However, he never before saw four candidates elected on the first count in the Longford LEA. The fact he was one of them is a personal success for him, as he saw his own vote increase by around 50%.

“I am extremely pleased with the vote Fianna Fail got in the Longford district, particularly as leader of the Fianna Fail grouping in Longford County Council for the past 10 years,” he stated.

“As a party, we managed the vote very well. I am confident that we will get Remu (Uremu Adejinmi) elected as our fourth councillor,” he added.

With Fine Gael looking likely to take three seats, the Longford LEA will have a stable look about it for the next council term.

“Fair dues to Fine Gael, if they get three councillors elected. There will be a mix of experience and newer candidates. It augurs well for the next five years,” he commented.

There was a large and diverse field in the Longford LEA, but in the end, people opted to familiar faces, with smaller parties and independents not gaining ground.

“So much for the slogan ‘we need change’,” Cllr Butler said, tongue in cheek.

“In troubled times, people prefer experience,” he added.
