#ShopLongford launched as Christmas season begins - 'imperative we all make concerted effort to shop local'
#ShopLongford has launched, as local shoppers are encouraged to support local businesses this Christmas.
The campaign is supported by Local Enterprise Office (LEO), Longford, part of Longford County Council, and Longford Chamber of Commerce.
In its third year, the campaign highlights the many County Longford businesses who are offering great Christmas gifts this festive season, as well as the need to keep money in the local economy.
You can find local retailers and other businesses to buy from on LEO Longford social media pages, as well as via LocalEnterprise.ie/Longford.
Local businesses are also encouraged to get involved by contacting LEO Longford to be highlighted as part of the campaign.
Last year, over 100 businesses covering the whole county were promoted, with a great response received from all to the #ShopLongford message.
Money spent locally is retained within the local economy and helps to support local jobs and industry.
Research from the Irish Times shows that every €10 spent within the local community generates almost €50 for the local economy. Buying local is also the more sustainable option, with a smaller carbon footprint. The same research shows that local businesses donate five more to groups in the community, compared to larger firms.
Speaking at the launch, Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern said, “I am so glad to see the Council’s Local Enterprise Office and the local Chamber of Commerce highlight this important message and these many great local businesses again this year.
"Money spent locally is kept locally, for the betterment of our communities, our people, our economy and our towns and villages. I strongly hope that Longford people consider local businesses first this Christmas.”
Longford Chamber of Commerce President Fiona Fenelon said, “Longford Chamber of Commerce are delighted to again partner with Longford Local Enterprise Office driving the shop local message through this year’s Shop Longford campaign. It is imperative that we all make a concerted effort to shop local wherever possible.
"Every single euro spent locally positively impacts our community. We are very lucky to have so many fantastic businesses on our doorstep which are excellently showcased through this year’s Shop Longford campaign. The campaign runs right up to Christmas, I appeal to everyone to take this opportunity to promote their business.
