The Sinn Féin Pobhlacht, County Longford annual Easter Commemoration will be held in Tubberpatrick cemetery, Ballinamuck at the grave of General George Blake on Sunday, March 31 at 3pm.

General Blake was the son of a protestant landlord from county Mayo. He was one of the leaders of the French Irish insurgents at the Battle of Ballinamuck on September 8, 1798.

He was captured and hanged at Kiltycreevagh. His remains were taken into a barn belonging to one of the McKennas and buried the next day in Tubberpatrick burial ground where a monument was erected to his memory and to which commemorations are held every seven years.

The county Longford annual Easter commemoration committee was formed in 1926.

The annual commemoration has been held every year since.

Wear an Easter lily to honour Ireland's dead.

“The fools, the fools, they have left us our Fenian dead and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace.”
