Sinn Féin TD not invited to briefing meeting on Lanesboro refugee plan

While calling for a full investigation into the fire that was started at the former convent building in Lanesboro which was due to house 85 Ukrainian refugees, Sinn Fein TD for Longford-Westmeath, Sorca Clarke also took the opportunity to highlight that she received no invitation to Tuesday's briefing meeting in regards to the plans for the property.
In a statement, Deputy Clarke commented, “It is my understanding that the property had been earmarked for Ukrainian refugees in May. It is also my understanding that a meeting took place between the owner of the property, Longford County Council chiefs, and local independent and Fine Gael councillors recently.
“It is another example of government officials’ lack of communication as I myself received no invitation or notice of this meeting.
"I would hope that the department would be more transparent in future when it comes to informing local representatives on these matters.”
Deputy Clarke praised the fire service for their speedy response in getting the fire under control and averting further damage.
She said: “I condemn this action and I am thankful that nobody was hurt. What happened is deeply concerning and must be condemned outright.
“I want to express my thanks to the fire service for their actions in getting the fire under control and averting further damage.
“Lanesboro is a quiet, peaceful town and something like this is certainly not the norm. People are alarmed by what happened, and what we need to see now is a full and thorough investigation as to how this fire started and that ensures those involved will be held fully accountable for their actions.
“Similar incidents have occurred in various parts of the state in recent months. This is a worrying trend that cannot be tolerated. Those responsible must be brought to justice."
