St Mel’s 1994 squad reunion

When St. Mel’s won the Leinster Colleges Senior Championship title back in 1994, the team was captained by Martin Flanagan (Westmeath) and also featured Niall Sheridan and Padraic Davis - exceptional footballers who went on to represent their counties with great distinction.

Sheridan and Davis were leading lights on the Longford senior team for several years while former Roscommon star Conor Connelly was also a member of that successful St. Mel’s team 20 years ago.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Leinster triumph, a reunion of the squad is taking place on Saturday December 20th when the past St. Mel’s players will be togging out in a challenge match against the present senior team (captained by Peter Hanley) at the Longford Slashers ground, throw-in 6pm.
The gate receipts are being donated to local charity, St. Christopher’s, and support for the novel event will be greatly appreciated with the chief organiser Eamon Wall (who played for St. Mel’s in the 1994 Leinster Final) working very hard behind the scenes to make this a reunion to rememember with plenty of Christmas cheer and all that!
Special guest is singer/songwriter Charlie McGettigan, whose son Shane played on the 1994 college team but who was tragically killed in 1998, and a trophy in his memory will be presented to the winners of the St. Mel’s past v present clash which is attracting a lot of interest.
For the record, St. Mel’s hammered St. Peter’s Wexford 3-11 to 1-5 in the 1994 Leinster Colleges senior title decider at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise.
