Ballinamuck Community Enterprise Group reveals new signage for Edenmore Bog Walk
Ballinamuck Community Enterprise group have unveiled new signage for the Edenmore Bog Walk.
In addition to the signage, the pathways have been upgraded.
Both the signage and development of the pathways were sponsored by Larkin Windows and Doors and the work was carried out by Marty McNerney Plant Hire and Peter McDonnell. The signage was designed by Ronan Larkin and printed by Longford Signs.
Paddy Howe, Chairperson of Ballinamuck Enterprise Group said it was a huge addition to the walk: “It clearly marks out the walk for visitors and the biodiversity that can be seen on the bog walk.”
Mr Howe thanked Brendan Larkin in particular for his investment of time and his interest in this fantastic local amenity.
Edenmore Bog Walk is a 4.5km looped walk and is one of a network of ‘Raised Bogs’ that can be found throughout the midlands of Ireland.
Raised Bogs are highly acidic, waterlogged and nutrient-deprived habitats which support a range of specialised plants and animals. This habitat has become very rare in Europe.
The centre of Edenmore bog is in relatively pristine condition, and supports two rare mosses that are only found on high quality raised bog.
The edges of the bog support a range of woodland, grassland and wetland habitats, which add to the diversity of flora and fauna in the area.
Ballinamuck Community Enterprise Group is a voluntary group established in 1994. Since its formation the group have developed:
A Visitors Centre in the ’98 Hall containing an exhibition outlining the events leading to the Battle of Ballinamuck in 1798, the battle itself and the aftermath.
It has also provided signage along the Battle Trail at the four points of engagement.
A website that includes a virtual tour of the Battle Trail, the history of the village and information on all the community groups in Ballinamuck (www.ballinamuck.ie)
Four walking trails – Kiltycreevagh Ramble; Edenmore Bog Walk plus habitat survey; Battle Trail, Shanmullagh Hill; Lough Salach Walk
And a longstanding twinning partnership with Essert in France
