Two young women who pleaded guilty to the theft of perfume from a Longford pharmacy had their case concluded at Longford District Court.

Abbie Cahill (21) of 34 D, Mary Aikenhead House, Dublin 8 and Ellie Cullen (18) of 121 Clogher Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12 both faced the charge that on October 25, 2023 at 3:30pm at Wards Pharmacy, Ballymahon St, Longford they stole property to the value of €82.40.

Sergeant Enda Daly outlined details of the events that brought the young women before the court. Sgt Daly said three females entered the pharmacy and took perfume, but were stopped as they left. The items were recovered in saleable condition.

Solicitor for both defendants, Diarmuid Quinn, indicated that his client were entering pleas of guilty to the charges before the court.

Mr Quinn acknowledged Ms Cahill had three previous convictions, the most recent for a similar offence in Cork. The solicitor said his client is in receipt of a disability payment as she has problems with her vision.

Mr Quinn explained that Ms Cullen, who had on previous conviction, is also on disability. He said his clients had come down from Dublin and were drinking on the train and had undertaken the theft as an act of foolishness.

Taking the facts of the case into consideration Judge Cronin said she would impose a two month custodial sentence on Ms Cahill, but suspended it for 12 months: “I would consider community service, but because of the defendant's previous convictions I have no option,” she said.

Recognisance was set at €200.

Because Ms Cullen had only one previous conviction, Judge Cronin imposed a conviction with a fine of €200, giving the defendant six months to pay.

A third accused, Yasmine Kenna (18) of 4 Tor An Ri Court, Balgaddy, Lucan, Dublin did not appear in court to answer the charges and a bench warrant was issued.
