Practical solution needed urgently in Edenderry and other towns and villages

RENEWED calls for action on speeding were voiced at a meeting of the Edenderry Municipal District.

Cllr Noel Cribbin said speed was “the main thing” mentioned to him while canvassing in the recent local elections.

“Nearly all of us got it,” remarked the Fine Gael councillor, adding that speeding was going on in every town and village.

Cllr Cribbin said that while traffic had “lightened” in Edenderry town centre since the new inner relief road was opened, speeding had got worse and he specifically mentioned Francis Street and Fr Murphy Street.

His party colleague Cllr Liam Quinn agreed but said he thought it was a problem which had a solution.

“A very modest change here and there can improve it in some places,” he stated.

Cllr Claire Murray, Sinn Fein, said Fr Murphy Street was a particular problem area and residents had asked if there was no safe way to cross the road in an area with estates and football pitches on each side of the road.

Cllr Murray said some parents were locking their gates because they were afraid for their children going outside.

“There has to be a simple practical solution,” she said. “It's a matter of urgency.”

District chair Cllr Fergus McDonnell supported those comments and said a meeting dedicated to traffic calming should take place.

“If we could do that sooner rather than later it'd be a positive step,” said Cllr McDonnell.
