THE need for increased investment in rural roads has been stressed by West Offaly Fianna Fáil candidate Barbara Daly.

The Birr Area candidate said the state of rural roads has been a constant source of dissatisfaction on the doorsteps, despite significant Government investment in the nation’s road infrastructure.

In a statement she said: “As a councillor I will, if elected, campaign for a greater share of the roads allocation and a rebalancing of priorities. It is futile to talk about developing tourism in West Offaly or seeking to attract SMEs into rural areas if our roads network is not up to scratch.

“The new council will have many challenges, but a consistent approach to planning and development will be essential if we are to build on the progress already made. The upgrading of rural roads and improved maintenance must be an urgent priority. In areas like Shannon Harbour, Shannonbridge, Belmont, Clonfanlough as well as the towns of Kilcormac and Ferbane I’ve already received representations about specific roads. Current councillors are very familiar with and share the level of frustration felt by local communities.

“Through Offaly County Council and as a Fianna Fáil representative, I will be demanding a coherent plan which puts the needs of rural dwellers at the centre of roads policy. Improved access, road safety and rural regeneration are important elements of any plan to make West Offaly a better place for all,” she said.
