Concerns have been raised surrounding the the lack of public lighting stationed around prominent youth facilities in Offaly's capital at the April meeting of Tullamore Municipal District.

Councillor Shane Murray highlighted the issue at the latest monthly meeting of the elected members in the Town Hall. He stated: "A question I have is in regards to public lighting down at the Tullamore Scouts Den and where the local boxing club is. Is there any movement on any sort of lighting down there, there's lots of kids heading down that direction regularly, its become very busy especially with the greenway there as well."

The Fianna Fáil representative continued: "I know there was new works done with the fire service and the lights were kind of taken away from down there. However, the boxing club and the scouts den are two things that we want to be promoting more in the town because they are doing well in that area and we just need to do what we can to help them along a little bit."

Cllr Murray concluded: "They could also do with a new surface for the road down there" referring to the Pearse Park area which has become a hub locally for youth activities to which the Cathaoirleach Declan Harvey ensured: "That's in the plans for down there."

Joe Dooley, Senior Executive Engineer for the Tullamore Municipal District addressed Councillor Murray's concerns. He said: "Some of the lights there were inside the boundary of the new build so they had to go, I have been liaising with the fire service there for an option to put public lights on the boundary wall, I will just have to work that out with out public lighting contractor."

Dooley also elaborated on potential upcoming works for the busy space. He acknowledged: "It is an area we are looking at for future development so there are plans being discussed internally for that location so it'll hinge on that as well. We don't want to put up new lights and then have to take them down again if a development was to go ahead."

Dooley assured: "I'll get a price on them and then we can make a decision then whether we progress with it because I'm also conscious of the public attending there at both the Tullamore Scout's Den and the boxing club."
