Court hears woman in the Midlands on string of theft and public order charges 'will continue her efforts to address her issues'

A defendant “in the grip of serious alcohol addiction” was warned of the consequence of coming back before District Court Judge Bernadette Owens at Longford District Court.
Ann Murphy of 10 St Michael's Court, Longford came before the court on a number of public order and theft charges.
The most recent charges for the defendant was that on April 30, 2023 at Ambulance Station, Mount Carmel, Dublin Road, Longford she engaged in threatening or abusive behaviour, on February 18, 2023 at Lidl, Dublin Rd, Longford she stole steak and wine to the value of €18.68.
There were eight other public intoxication charges between September '22 and July 23, and five other charges of theft, public order and failing to keep a court appointment.
Solicitor Frank Gearty said his client has previously endeavoured to deal with her addiction issues and is awaiting a place in Cluain Mhuire. The solicitor said the defendant was entering a plea of guilty to all charges.
“Ann has serious problems she must address,” Mr Gearty said. Sergeant Mark Mahon told the judge the defendant has 25 previous convictions; 16 for public order and six for theft.
Mr Gearty said: “Ann appreciates that the court has been good to her. She will continue her efforts to address her issues.”
Judge Bernadette Owens acknowledged the defendant was “a person of tragedy in the grip of serious alcohol addiction.”
The judge sentenced her to serve a two month sentence for the April public order offence, and a consecutive two month sentence for the February theft charge, both were suspended. The period of suspension was 12 months and 18 months, all other matters were taken into consideration.
The judge concluded by saying: “If she comes before me on a public order or bail issue she will be remanded in custody. If she is then convicted any suspended sentences will be invoked.”
