THE curtain came down on what one can only describe as a wonderful playing season for Birr ‘66’ Bridge Club on Monday May 15th.

In the aftermath of Covid, it was wonderful to see 10 plus tables every night of members doing what they really enjoy, playing the game.

The night started with the AGM with over 40 in attendance. President Paul Kerins welcomed everyone and thanked all for their support during the year. He also thanked the County Arms Hotel for all their help during the bridge season.

The Secretary Emer Hanniffy gave a detailed report, and also thanked everyone for their support and co-operation throughout the year. The year was an exceptional one with the club climbing to in excess of 50 members. Paul announced the incoming, President Ita Cavanagh who had the best wishes of all for the coming year. The meeting went on to elect all the outgoing committee, with Majella Gibbons taking on the Assistant Secretary position. The meeting then concluded.

All adjourned upstairs for the final night dinner. The menu gave everyone a great choice, and the food served up was exceptional. All present had the highest of praise for the quality and service provided. All one can say to the staff is take a well earned bow and they express their sincere thanks to each of them. Again, sincere thanks to all in the County Arms Hotel. The night ended with the presentation of prizes for four competitions played during the season. The Team of Four, the Individual, Club Pairs, and the President’s Prize.

Bridge classes have been ongoing in Ballyegan Hall during the year and are set to continue for some time. During the summer months it will switch to Monday nights starting on May 29th at 8pm and finishing by 10.30pm each night. The format will be more on playing with 30 to 40 minutes at the end of each session given to tuition on items such as how to show a Weak or Strong hand, Card Reading, Signalling, Defensive leads, Doubles among other things. All are welcome to attend. These nights will also be used to help people learn how to set up the movements on the new system of computer scoring now used in the club.
