Man and woman were arraigned at Tullamore Circuit Court

A VERY drunk man was verbally abusive towards members of the Gardai, the September 20 sitting of Tullamore District Court was told.

Before the court was James Martin, Derreen, Kilkerrin, Ballinasloe and he was summonsed for committing a number of offences on August 27, 2023 on Bridge Street, Tullamore.

These offences included failing to provide his name and address to Garda Ciaran Ryan; intoxication in a public place; and using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the intoxication and threatening charges. The Sergeant told the court that Mr Martin had been drinking in Bridge House Hotel and he came to the attention of the Gardai just after midnight when he left the hotel and was on Bridge Street.

“He was asked to leave the scene,” said the Sergeant, “but he didn't. He became verbally very abusive towards the Gardai. He has no previous convictions.”

The defending solicitor told the court that his client is 32 years of age and is a farmer.

“Unfortunately on the night in question he had drunk too much.” The solicitor said his client is getting married in the near future.

Judge Andrew Cody joked that he was doubtful that the wedding reception will be taking place in Bridge House Hotel. He convicted and fined €250 for the Section 6 charge and took the Section 4 charge into consideration.
