Deputy Ryan O’Meara TD welcomes “game changer” funding for North Tipperary

New funding for North Tipperary has been described as a game changer by a local TD.

Fianna Fáil TD for North Tipperary, Deputy Ryan O’Meara TD, has welcomed €280,000 in funding for North Tipperary under the new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund.

Under today’s announcement, the Regeneration of Sarsfield St. Backlands & Enhancement of Connectivity, Nenagh will receive €130,000, while the Age-Friendly Community Fitness Hub: Property Acquisition and Development, Thurles will receive €150,000.

The funding for Nenagh will help progress the expansion of St. John’s Lane Car Park and improve pedestrian access in the area.

Tipperary County Council has already acquired the necessary land, and the €130,000 investment will allow the project to move forward to the design stage, with a view to delivering an extension of the car park and significantly improving connectivity within the town.

Speaking following the announcement, Deputy O’Meara said:

“I am pleased to see this level of funding coming to North Tipperary. This has the potential to be a game changer for the projects involved and for the communities they serve.

“This investment will help unlock regeneration, support new development and make a difference for the people who live, work and raise their families in these communities.

“I want to thank Minister James Browne for his work in delivering this funding and, importantly, for understanding the potential these projects have and the significant impact this investment can have on the wider area.”

Councillor JP O’Meara also welcomed the funding, saying: “The need for more car parking spaces is constantly being raised with me by local businesses, local people, and visitors to the town. This funding allows for the essential expansion of car parking facilities in Nenagh and I look forward to its progression.”

The new Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund, which replaces the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, will support almost 120 projects across every local authority in the State, with more than €400 million in investment available.

The programme will fund projects including the redevelopment of vacant and underused sites, public realm improvements and community and civic infrastructure.

It will support the Town Centre First policy, with a particular focus on regeneration in disadvantaged areas and on strengthening towns and cities as places to live, work and spend time.

“This funding will have a significant and lasting impact on our communities, and I look forward to seeing these projects now progress,” Deputy O’Meara concluded.
