Remains discovered six months after her disappearance from Portlaoise in 1993

GARDAI have made a fresh appeal for information on the murder of a woman whose body was found in an Offaly bog in 1994.

Marie Kilmartin (35) disappeared from her home at Beladd, Portlaoise 30 years ago on December 16, 1993 and on June 10 of the following year remains which were identified as hers were discovered in a bog at Borness, Mountmellick, on the Offaly side of the county boundary.

Gardai said that Marie was last seen alive at her home in Portlaoise at about 4pm, 30 years ago on December 16.

A garda statement said that three arrests have been made as part of this investigation, but to date, no one has been charged.

An Garda Síochána said they continue to liaise closely with the Marie's family in relation to the investigation.

“Gardaí want to thank the public who have been of assistance in this investigation to date.

An Garda Síochána is continuing to appeal to anyone who may have information with regards to this case to come forward to them,” the statement added.

“With the passage of time some person may now be in a position to provide information to investigating Gardaí that they could not provide at the time, or maybe some person who did provide information at the time may be now in a position to provide further information.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room at Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674100, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

An Garda Síochána said they will treat any interactions with confidentiality, compassion and sensitivity.

Ms Kilmartin's body was found in a drain off a bog road. It was badly decomposed when discovered.

Nearly six months earlier, just before she disappeared, the Ballinasloe native had returned from work at a senior citizens' party in Portlaoise.

Gardai believe she then went out after receiving a phone call from a public kiosk at Dublin Road, Portlaoise.

Investigators also learned that a male was seen at the kiosk at the time the call was made.
