Oakfield tree planting ceremony celebrates community, nature, and future generations

A tree planting ceremony took place in Oakfield recently, as residents joined forces with Tullamore Tidy Towns to plant an inspiring selection of fruit trees throughout the estate.

Among those in attendance were local TD Tony McCormack, Minister of State Robert Troy, and Cllr Shane Murray.

The event, which saw cherry, pear, and apple trees planted, was a celebration not only of environmental sustainability but of community spirit.

All the trees chosen are fruit-bearing, offering both pollination benefits and a visual, tangible reward for children growing up in Oakfield — the chance to quite literally see the fruits of their labour.

Minister Robert Troy, himself a long-time supporter and participant in the Tidy Towns movement in Westmeath, praised the initiative.

“Tidy Towns groups are essential across the county,” he said. “Recently, I’ve worked to ensure these volunteer groups no longer have to pay insurance — it’s vital that we support, not penalise, those who give their time to better their communities.”

Deputy Tony McCormack echoed the Minister’s sentiment and praised the strong community involvement.

“The people of Oakfield clearly care deeply about their area. Choosing fruit trees shows foresight and care for the environment,” he said. “As the saying goes, ‘the person who plants a garden believes in the future.’ What a wonderful example for the young people of Oakfield.”

Cllr Shane Murray welcomed both the Deputy and the Minister, commending the local residents and Tidy Towns volunteers for their dedication. He highlighted the significance of tree planting for both ecological and social well-being in the area.

With each tree planted, Oakfield not only grows greener, but stronger — rooted in community, and looking confidently toward the future.
