A new book on the history of Offaly architecture was launched in Tullamore last week. Rachel McKenna, the county architect with Offaly County Council, launched Traditional Architecture in Offaly: History, Materials and Furniture 1800 to Present Day.
Rachel has illustrated and designed the book which was inspired by Egans' farmhouse at Carrigeen, Five Alley, Birr.
Egans' farmhouse dates from the 1800s and has many of its traditional features preserved. It has been opened up by the owners for visits during annual Heritage Weeks.
Traditional Architecture in Offaly was launched by Claudia Kinmonth, author of Irish Country Furniture and Furnishings 1700-2000.
Claudia studied the farmhouse at Carrigeen and was a presenter at the Annual Heritage Seminar in Birr on the subject.
Claudia has maintained a great interest in the architecture of Offaly and by agreeing to launch the book she has once again demonstrated her huge support.
Traditional Architecture in Offaly: History, Materials and Furniture 1800 to Present Day will retail at €30 and is available in local bookshops. It is on sale at the Offaly History Book shop on Bury Quay where there is also be an online option through the www.offalyhistory.com/shop
