Councillor Shane Lee described the Roscrea junction as a 'free for all'

A busy junction in the centre of Roscrea town has been described as a "free for all" by a local Councillor, who is calling for a trial run of traffic safety measures.

Rosemary Square in Roscrea town centre is built around the Fancy Fountain and is the point where six roads converge in a double staggered junction and causes much confusion for visiting motorists unfamiliar with the heritage town.

A local Councillor described entering the junction as a game of "Russian roulette" for motorists and pedestrians and told the April monthly meeting of the Municipal Council for the Roscrea are on Monday (April 20) the junction becomes a "free for all" in times of heavy traffic.

"Something needs to be done on a trial basis," Councillor Shane Lee (Ind Lowry Team) said, adding he "understands it is a massive undertaking, but it is one of the worst junctions in the District."

"Entering the junction from beside Douglas' shop towards the town centre is very dangerous," he said.

The meeting heard that Irish Water are currently engaged in a large project at Rosemary Square which is adding to traffic disruptions and what traffic safety measures might be introduced as a solution will be examined when those works conclude.a
