Heritage Council of Ireland currently carrying out restoration work at cemetery near Ballycumber

THE annual Ecumenical service will be held at Liss cemetery, just outside Ballycumber, on Sunday next, July 21st at 2.30pm.

This cemetery has burials from the Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland traditions.

All are welcome to join this celebration in word and song on Sunday next. You can be assured of a warm welcome, a message from the Bible and some light refreshments afterwards.

The Heritage Council of Ireland are currently carrying out restoration work on the railings, gates and piers on the Church of Ireland side, so access will be through the Catholic side only, this year.

The church was built around 1820. The piers and railings were most likely put in place at that time. After all this time, the piers are leaning and the wing walls are misaligned; the gates and railings are very old and rusted; the gates sag and drag the ground so they don’t close properly. The gates and railings have been removed to be restored off site. The pier on this side has been taken down and will be rebuilt when the gates and railings are returned. Access to this side of the cemetery will be improved following this work.

The work on the piers and wing walls will be carried out by Damien Condon, Calx Renders Ltd. The railings will be restored by Brendan St John, Forge & Iron Works. Both will be under the supervision of Richard McLoughlin, Lotts Architecture & Urbanism Ltd. The work is supported by the Heritage Council under the Community Heritage Grant Scheme 2024.

On Sunday August 25th, during Heritage Week, a walking tour of Liss cemetery will take place at 3pm. Visitors will be shown headstones of notable families from the locality and some history of those families. All are welcome to this event also.
