Local TD encourages undergrad students to apply for support

O'Meara encourages applications for the 1916 Bursary
Fianna Fáil TD for Tipperary North and Northwest Kilkenny, Ryan O'Meara, is encouraging students from across Tipperary and Kilkenny to apply for the 1916 Bursary.
The 1916 Bursary aims to encourage participation and success by students who are most socio economically disadvantaged and from groups that are significantly underrepresented in higher education.
The bursary can support students undertaking undergraduate study on either a full time or part time basis.
The application portal for the 1916 Bursary is now open and applications will be accepted until 5pm on 9 October 2026.
Deputy O'Meara is urging all eligible students to apply.
“The 1916 Bursary can make a huge difference in the educational journey of students from National Access Plan priority groups,” Deputy O'Meara said.
“Applications can be made online and, with SUSI assisting in the application, assessment and payments process, it is easier than ever for students to apply.
“I am encouraging all eligible students across Tipperary and Kilkenny to make an application. Testimonials from previous awardees have shown just how valuable this support can be for students throughout their studies."
Guidelines for the bursary and full details on eligibility can be found at www.1916bursary.ie.
The 1916 Bursary is currently co funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.
The availability of European Social Fund funding in recent years has allowed for a significant increase in the number of bursaries that can potentially be awarded.
Deputy O'Meara added: “I am glad to see the application process being made more streamlined and accessible, with a dedicated customer care channel and a continued focus on ensuring students receive their supports as early as possible.
“The 1916 Bursary is about opening up access to higher education and supporting students who may otherwise face significant financial challenges in getting to and through college.”
Applications for the 1916 Bursary are open until 5pm on 9 October 2026. To be eligible, applicants must meet the financial, priority group and college entry eligibility criteria.
