A MAN who was urinating in public called gardai “bastards”, Tullamore District Court was told.

Seamus Flanagan (42), Summerhill, Roscrea, Co Tipperary, pleaded guilty to committing public order offences on January 29 last at William Street, Tullamore.

Sergeant James O'Sullivan said he had been seen urinating against a wall in a public place and he refused to give gardai his name and address. Mr Flanagan was highly intoxicated and unsteady on his feet and was arrested under the Public Order Act. He became aggressive and called the gardai “bastards” and a “shower of c***s”. “Have the guards nothing else to be at?” the man asked.

Mr Flanagan's solicitor, Donal Farrelly, who entered the pleas of guilty on the man's behalf, said his client was a construction worker who had gone drinking after a long day at work. He had drunk too much and regretted saying the wrong things.

Sergeant O'Sullivan told Judge Andrew Cody the accused had two previous convictions, both for drink-driving and in 2020 he had been disqualified from driving for six years.

Judge Cody imposed a fine of €500 for a breach of the peace and took into consideration charges of urinating in public and public drunkenness.
