Man who attacked another man in Tullamore claimed victim made 'advances' towards girlfriend

A MAN will have to pay €2,500 in compensation if Judge Andrew Cody is to strike out a charge of assaulting another man last month in Tullamore town centre, causing him harm.
Judge Cody made the order after a plea of guilty was entered to the offence by a Georgian national, Badri Jangavadze (25), Russellstown, Carlow.
Mr Jangavadze admitted assaulting Olkeksandr Olshevskyi at Church Street, Tullamore on October 20 last.
Garda Christopher Ward told the court that gardai had been told by a bouncer at the Bridge House that two men had been fighting outside the premises.
Garda Ward said he saw the accused, Mr Jangavadze, standing on the injured party and punching him in the head at Church Street.
The garda stopped Mr Jangavadze and pulled him away and after that he became compliant and offered no resistance.
Garda Ward told the court the defendant said the injured party had been making unwanted advances towards his girlfriend.
The court was told the accused was in full-time employment with a fencing company in Carlow and was willing to pay €1,000 towards redress.
Judge Cody said that punching a man on the head on the ground was a serious offence and the guilty party would have to pay €2,500 if he wished to have the assault charge against him struck out.
