Offaly has a rich history of hurling with All-Ireland wins as recently as this year when the Faithful won the U20 crown.

Senior wins in the 1990s and 1980s marked the golden era for Offaly hurling but many of the players on those panels came from the south of the county, the traditional hurling stronghold.

Areas in the north of the county like Edenderry, Rhode, Walsh Island and others were traditionally the football hotbed but there was a momentous day recently in one Edenderry school when hurling training was held for the first time ever.

St Mary's Primary School in Edenderry posted about the occasion on social media, saying: "For the first time in St. Mary’s history, hurling training took place for 4th, 5th and 6th class boys."

The school was traditionally St Mary's Girl's School but was partially mixed up to certain ages in the 1990s and has become fully co-ed in recent years. The principal is former Offaly and Ballyfore footballer Niall Spain.

The hurling bug has certainly caught on and it's onwards and upwards to competition with the school's post added: "The boys will work on their skills for the next few weeks in preparation for their debut in the Cumann na mBunscol competition in Spring 2025.

"Well done to the 20 boys who took part and we hope you continue to work on those skills! Cleactadh a dhéanann maistreacht! Practice makes perfect!”
