FINES totalling €800 were imposed on a young man who drove without insurance or a valid NCT disc.

Tullamore District Court heard that Alex Hansbury (19), Highgate Street, Birr was doing some work on a Ford Focus and taking it for a test drive when he was stopped at the Applegreen service station on Railway Road in Birr on April 18 last.

Garda Dhiarmaid Loughnane said the vehicle was seized and the driver had previous convictions for being an unaccompanied learner driver and not displaying 'L' plates.

Defending solicitor Patrick Martin said Mr Hansbury, who worked at a distribution warehouse and on a farm, was not currently driving.

Judge Andrew Cody imposed a €500 fine for the insurance offence and €300 for not displaying a valid NCT disc.
