Garda hospitalisation following Clonbullogue incident highlights need for strong Garda presence and tougher sanctions - Deputy Carol Nolan.

THE injury sustained by a Garda during a significant anti-social behaviour incident involving Halloween fireworks in Clonbollogue underlines the importance of ensuring that Gardaí have the numbers, resources and community support necessary to police local areas effectively and safely.

That's according to Independent TD Carol Nolan who said her immediate thoughts were with the Garda involved and she wished them a full and speedy recovery:

"Nobody should face injury while carrying out their duties and I want to extend my best wishes to the Garda involved following this very serious incident in Clonbullogue."

She said the incident also reinforced concerns she had previously raised regarding Garda visibility and the continuing pressure on frontline policing resources across rural Ireland:

"People want to see Gardaí present in their communities. They want to know that there are sufficient personnel available to respond when incidents occur and that local stations are properly staffed and resourced. A visible Garda presence is reassuring for communities, but it is also one of the strongest deterrents to anti-social behaviour."

"We know you cannot always prevent this type of reckless criminality. There will always be individuals who are prepared to put others at risk and engage in dangerous and anti-social behaviour. However, what we can do is ensure that An Garda Síochána has the resources, personnel and operational capacity needed to establish a visible presence in our communities. We also need to move away from this idea that tougher sanctions for those involved in this kind of activity is no longer acceptable. There is far too much of a bleeding-heart mentality around crime, and that has to end."

"Across Offaly, residents consistently tell me that they want to see more Garda visibility in their towns and villages. Whether it is concerns around anti-social behaviour, public order offences, illegal dumping, trespassing, or rural crime, there is a strong feeling that a visible Garda presence acts as both a deterrent and a reassurance. Incidents such as the one we have seen in Clonbullogue highlight why local communities place such importance on having Gardaí on the ground and actively engaged in community policing."

Deputy Nolan noted that she had recently highlighted these issues in the Dáil, including the need to strengthen Garda resources in areas such as Edenderry, where rapid population growth must be matched by adequate policing capacity:

"As I stated in the Dáil two weeks ago, Edenderry is one of the fastest-growing towns in the Midlands. However, population growth must be matched by the Garda resources needed to support it. That is a concern not just for Edenderry but for a number of expanding communities across Offaly and the wider region."

"There is no substitute for having Gardaí on the ground. If we want safer communities, then we need to ensure that Garda visibility remains a priority."

Deputy Nolan said that supporting frontline Gardaí requires more than expressions of gratitude after difficult incidents.

"Everyone will rightly wish the injured
