A YOUNG driver who admitted not having a novice plate on display told Tullamore District Court he had forgotten to put it on the vehicle when he changed his car.

Cian Duffy (20), Clonmacnoise, Shannonbridge was summonsed for non-display of an 'N' plate at Ferbane Street, Creggan, Cloghan on November 28 last year.

Garda Kieran Fitzpatrick told Judge Michelle Finan that Mr Duffy was co-operative and had never come to the attention of the law before.

The driver's solicitor, Patrick Martin, entered a plea of guilty and said the issue was that his client was in jeopardy with the number of penalty points he would have.

When Judge Finan asked Mr Duffy if he had any money for a charitable donation she was told that €300 was available.

Mr Duffy agreed he would donate that amount to Pieta House. He told the court he had already passed his driving test and because he was working he could afford the €300.

Judge Finan said she would strike out the summons once the money was paid.

She advised Mr Duffy to be “super careful” while driving from now on. “I want you to be an ambassador for road safety in your life,” she said.
