5: Right half back – Cormac Egan (Tullamore)Cormac Egan was one of the easiest selections on this team and we didn't have to waste two seconds deliberating over it. A terrific example to all young players of doing what needs to be done to prosper at the highest level, he is one of the most exciting footballers in the country. He has been a revelation since going to the half back line, the new rules have suited him every bit as much as anticipated and he was superb for Tullamore all season. Him and Cathal Flynn are two of the selections above all reproach on this team.

6: Centre half back – John Furlong (Tullamore)John Furlong's quality continues to win admirers. He is so good on the ball, a huge asset to Tullamore going forward and his ability to defend well, turnover ball and close down opponents is the most impressive part of his game.

7: Left half back – David Nally (Ferbane)David Nally has made both hurling and football teams and is a comfortable selection on this – Cormac Egan was not far away from making the hurling team. The Ferbane man is currently at the peak of his powers in both codes. He is not a big man but he is full of heart and he is so good on the ball. He was in great form for Ferbane, dictating games from defence and attack, and getting forward into advanced forward positions. He seldom wasted a ball and while he has been a county hurler and that seems to be his first choice game, he also has a great footballing passion and is certain to be on Mickey Harte's and Declan Kelly's list – he is their type of player and is another who is suited to the new rules.

8: Midfield – Aaron Leavy (Tullamore)Aaron Leavy had an excellent campaign for Tullamore and while he is now moving towards the 30 mark, he is another player who has made definite improvements. His stamina has improved, he has good physicality and he was ultra consistent for Tullamore in midfield. Rhode's Sean Hurley was an option – the former Kildare player improved as the campaign wore on, becoming increasingly influential. He managed his energy well, staying in midfield and not going too far out of that zone but he was very effective for Rhode. However, Aaron Leavy's influence was profound for Tullamore and he makes it.
