Offaly motor racing star Alex Dunne made his own piece of history on Saturday with a superb podium in the F3 sprint race in Barcelona. It was the first time an Irish driver made the podium in the prestigious series.
Starting in fourth on the grid and racing in McLaren colours, the young man from Clonbullogue took advantage of mistakes in front of him to get up to second within the opening laps.
For the remainder of the race, he pushed leader Mari Boya but couldn't find a way by. A crash elsewhere in the race brought out a safety car with three laps remaining and the race finished behind the safety car denying Alex the chance to fight for the lead in the closing stages.
In his first season in the series, it was his third points finish having previously scored points in Sakhir and Melbourne.
He is now in 16th place in the series and will start in ninth for the feature race early on Sunday which will be live on Sky Sports F1.
