Tony McCormack TD has released a statement after Irish households endured rising costs in home heating

Offaly TD Tony McCormack says consumers must be protected from oil price gouging amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Irish households have once again been hit with sharp increases in the cost of home heating oil and fuel in recent days as tensions continue to rise.

Reports indicate that the price of a standard fill of home heating oil has jumped significantly in a very short space of time as a result.

The sudden increases raise serious questions about fairness in the market especially during a time when families are already facing ongoing cost of living pressures.

Deputy McCormack disclosed that the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke TD has now asked the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to examine the situation closely which he believes is the correct step.

As part of a statement by the politician, Tony McCormack TD said: "Consumers need reassurance that the price they are paying reflects genuine market conditions rather than excessive increases that cannot be justified."

He continued: "As Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on SMEs and Retail, I want to be clear that I am strongly pro business. Small retailers, independent forecourts and local fuel suppliers are very important to communities across Ireland. They employ local people, serve rural areas and make a significant contribution to local economies."

McCormack also took the opportunity to distinguish the motives behind the price rises. He stated: "There is a clear difference between fair business practice and taking advantage of consumers during a time of uncertainty.

If companies are increasing prices dramatically on fuel that may have been purchased weeks or months ago at lower wholesale prices, then consumers are right to ask serious questions."

He added: "Many households across rural Ireland rely entirely on home heating oil and have very few alternatives. A sudden increase in price can place real pressure on family budgets."

The Offaly TD also acknowledged that rising fuel costs also affect the wider economy. He argued: "Higher energy prices increase transport costs, add to the price of goods and services and place further strain on households already dealing with higher living expenses."

Deputy McCormack also pointed out that the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has an important role in ensuring that markets operate fairly and transparently.

He is adamant that their examination must establish whether recent increases reflect genuine supply costs or whether consumers are being charged excessive margins.

The Fianna Fáil TD concluded: "Honest businesses have nothing to fear from scrutiny. Responsible operators should welcome transparency as it protects their reputation and maintains trust with their customers.

Consumers deserve fairness and confidence that they are paying a reasonable price. That principle must always come first."
