Low fines are ‘insufficient deterrent’

A NORTH TIPP Councillor told a recent meeting that we are too soft on litter offenders and we need to get tougher.

Cllr John Carroll told the meeting of Nenagh Municipal District that Tipperary County Council should increase its litter fines up to €500. On-the-spot litter fines in the county are presently €250. The Government increased these fixed penalty notices for littering and dog fouling nationwide from the previous €150 rate as part of stronger anti-dumping measures.

Cllr Carroll said the Government's increase wasn't enough and the level of littering and fly-tipping is still too high in the county.

“At the moment the fines are too low and are not a sufficient deterrent.” he commented. “They need to be more severe or else we are not going to have a chance of tackling this significant problem.”
