A former village shop could reopen with a new off-licence in Killeigh, if its planning application is successful.

A planning application was submitted recently to Offaly County Council seeking approval for the addition of an off-licence with all ancillary internal modifications to an existing shop in the village.

A decision on the planning application is due on August 27 next.

The planning application was submitted by Grennans on the Green LTD T/A Grennan’s XL shop.

Work has been underway at the former Gorman’s Shop in the centre of the village in recent weeks ahead of the planned reopening of the shop.

The last grocery shop in Killeigh closed its doors a number of years back after operating for almost 100 years. Gorman's shop was run by Liz and Frank Gorman for approximately 35 years and was the centre point of the village.

There has been a shop on the site of Gorman's for 100 years this year, starting with Buckleys, then the Mahon family, through Danny Coughlan and family, Marie Louise McEnroe, to Frank and Liz Gorman.

The closure of Gorman's in 2024 followed the closure of the post office and Langton's in the village leaving no grocery store to serve the people of Killeigh and district.

However, the shop is now set to enjoy a new lease of life and will be run by the same family who own the successful Grennan’s on the Green pub in the village.
