Prison sentence for man who hit two vehicles on street in Offaly and then drove away

A driver struck two cars on a street in Birr and drove away without stopping, last week's Tullamore District Court was told.

The incident happened on Pound Street, Birr on April 17, 2023. John McDonagh, 94 Hazelmere Naas, Co Kildare was charged with having no driving licence, dangerous driving, no insurance and hit and run.

Sgt Brendan Kearns pointed out that Mr McDonagh had eight previous convictions including failing to give a breath test, hit and run, and dangerous driving causing death.

“My client is 36 years of age,” said the defending solicitor Patrick Martin, “and is a married man with three children.”

The Judge was told Mr McDonagh was presently in custody.

Judge Cody convicted and sentenced to three months imprisonment and disqualified from driving for ten years.
