Prominent premises in Tullamore at risk of being placed on derelict sites register

A prominent premises on Columcille Street in Tullamore could be placed on the register of derelict sites.

The premises is located near the top of the street close to the Kilbeggan Bridge. It was formerly the office for DC Cabs but has been vacant for a number of years 

A notice from Offaly County Council posted on the window of the building states: ''Offaly County Council is concerned that the property in question is becoming a derelict site within the definition of Section 3 of the aforementioned act which states that a Derelict site is: 'Any land which detracts or is likely to detract to a material degree from the amenity, character, appearance of land in the neighbourhood of the land in question'."

Unless contact is made with Offaly County Council Derelict Sites Team and plans are put in place, the council is considering entering particulars regarding the property on the register of derelict sites in the county.

It advises that lands entered onto the register can be subject to a levy of 7% of the market value of the property, until such time as they are made non-derelict. Levies not paid will become a charge on the land. The property can also be considered for compulsory acquisition.

The notice ends by saying there is a ''high demand for housing in County Offaly and the council is working with a number of property owners to bring properties back into use with the assistance of various schemes.''

The owner is requested to contact Offaly County Council within four weeks of the date of the notice which is June 23, 2025.
