RIP: The Offaly music scene ‘has lost one of the greats’

Tributes are being paid to the late Peter Shanley, a man who had strong ties to the boxing club in Tullamore and also the musical scene in the midlands.
He was originally from Clara before moving to Arden View in Tullamore.
The late Mr Shanley was known to many through his fund-raising efforts on behalf of the boxing club in Tullamore.
His death notice on RIP.ie read: “Peter passed away peacefully at home on the 26th of July 2026. He is pre-deceased by his granddaughter Aoife, sister Marian and daughter in law Ann.
“Peter will be sadly missed by his loving family Karen, Kenny, Susan, Peter, Anne, Claire, Lyndsey and their mother Joan (Deceased), son in law Wes, grandchildren and great grandchildren, his brothers Sonny and Fintan, extended family, neighbours and friends. May He Rest In Peace.
“Reposing at his Home on Monday from 4pm until 6pm. Removal on Tuesday morning at 9.30am to the Church of the Assumption, Tullamore, arriving for Funeral Mass at 10am. Following Mass Peter's Burial will take place in Clonminch Cemetery, Tullamore”.
In RIP.ie condolences, Karen Scully wrote: “So sorry to hear of the passing of Peter, we had great times in Whites pub on a Friday night. Always kept in touch when I went to Australia to see how I was doing. The music scene has lost one of the greats. Rest in peace Captain Piquard”.
One of the recurring words in tributes was the word ‘gentleman’ which many associated with the late Peter.
“We were next-door neighbours to Peter for 33 years and a nicer, friendly gentleman you couldn't meet, never a bad word or harm was exchanged between us in those years and we thank you for that Peter. Rest easy now Peter and console your loved ones at this sad time in their lives,” wrote Breda and Pat Mooney from Mountbolus.
Many recalled happy times working with the late Peter in the Phoenix Arms in Tullamore.
Others noted that he was a “lovely man, who was always smiling,” with several noting he was a “great character”.
“Peter was definitely one of life’s greatest gentlemen. Always a hello and a kind word for people. I remember chats with him in pub many years ago. He was a lovely character, gave sound advice and knew how to uplift a person when down. Peter I hope you get the best bed in heaven and that you give all your family the strength to cope during this difficult time. RIP,” wrote David and Claire Lynch from Geashill.
