Strange twist means Shane Lowry misses out on automatic Ryder Cup qualification
A strange twist means that Shane Lowry has missed out on automatic Ryder Cup qualification by the narrowest of margins.
With six automatic places available, Shane finished seventh on the list after the weekend on 1275 points, less than four points behind Tyrell Hatton.
However despite finishing 13th at the Tour Championship on the PGA Tour over the weekend, the Offaly golfer picked up no Ryder Cup points as none were on offer for the PGA Tour's finale.
Shane told Sky Sports on Friday that he only found out on Monday that there were no points on offer at the event and said he thought he was going to be guaranteed points and an automatic place.
"I thought I was going to be pretty much guaranteed on the team. Yeah, I was somewhat disappointed to hear that, but the rules were made at the start for qualifying and that was it. I think I finished four points behind Tyrrell, which is pretty much a shot, which would have been nice. It looks like he's probably going to pass me up and I'm going to need a pick next week, so hopefully I get a nice phone call off Luke."
Rasmus Hojgaard will be on the European Ryder Cup Team Europe for the first time. He secured his spot at the Betfred British Masters on Sunday.
European captain Luke Donald will make his captain's picks next Monday when Shane Lowry will find out if he is on the European Team for a third time.
Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Rasmus Højgaard and Tyrrell Hatton are the six automatic picks.
Other players chasing a captain's pick include Sepp Straka, Ludvig Aberg, Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick, Matt Wallace and John Rahm
