Suspended sentence for passenger in car in Offaly who attempted to strike garda
A young woman refused to co-operate with gardai when they stopped a car because she was nervous, a solicitor told Tullamore District Court.
Pleas of guilty were entered by Natalie Hyland (20), with addresses at Oakfield Drive, Cabra Road, Thurles and Poyntz Lane, Kilkenny when she appeared before Judge Andrew Cody.
Ms Hyland admitted a breach of the peace and impeding or obstructing a garda.
Sergeant Brendan Kearns said that on October 16 last at Spollenstown Road, Spollenstown, Tullamore gardai stopped a vehicle and the accused woman became nervous when she was informed she would be searched.
Sergeant Kearns said the woman attempted to strike a garda. The search was negative, he added. She had previous convictions for assault and a breach of the peace.
Defending solicitor Aisling Maloney said her client was apologetic and remorseful about what she had done. She had been a passenger in the car and had been reluctant to leave the vehicle because she had no shoes on.
She panicked and overreacted in the moment and now accepted that she was fully wrong and wished to tell the court that she had respect for the gardai.
Judge Cody imposed a three-month sentence but suspended it for two years on entry of a €100 bond.
