Trolley trio dumped in river

Dumping into the river continues
Three shopping trolleys have been dumped in the Tullamore river near the town park.
The trio are very visible as the water level has dropped due to the dry weather.
Tullamore Tidy Towns committee has cleared out the Tullamore River on numerous occassions but yet the vandalism continues.
The act of illegal dumping underscors ongoing issues faced by the community in maintaining the cleanliness and ecological health of local waterways.
The Tidy Towns group known for their dedication undertook a significant cleanup effort in October 2021. Volunteers from Tidy Towns were joined by Shannonside Sub Aqua Club and Offaly County Council and together they extracted 1.5 tons of waste including more than 20 shopping trolleys, bicycles, and even an 60-inch flat screen TV from the river stretch between Kilcruttin and Millennium Square .
This repeated dumping not only mars the visual appeal of the river but also poses threats to its biodiversity and water quality.
The Tullamore Living River project spearheaded by Offaly County Council, aims to address these issues by enhancing natural habitats and improving water conditions.
Tullamore river boosts the highest density of otter signs found in a national survey anywhere in Ireland.
It is no coincidence that Tullamore River is home to the Otter. With improved water quality has come increased numbers of small fish and native white tailed crayfish which provides the Otter with a steady food supply.
