Tullamore Harriers athlete runs at World Relay Championships

Congratulations to Aaron Keane, who made his Irish senior athletics debut as part of the Irish Mixed 4x400m relay team at the World Relays Championships in Guangzhou, China, on Sunday, May 11th. It was a proud moment for Aaron and indeed Tullamore Harriers AC, having been selected to travel as part of the Athletics Ireland squad.
The Irish team had already secured qualification for the World Athletics Championships Mixed 4x400m relay in Tokyo this September by finishing second in their heat the previous day. That strong performance was delivered by Conor Kelly, Rhasidat Adeleke, Cillin Greene, and Sharlene Mawdsley.
For the final, team management made changes to the line-up, bringing in Keane to run the third leg.
Following the USA in their heat, Ireland claimed one of the two automatic qualifying spots for the prestigious World Championships.
Aaron delivered an impressive split of 46.97 seconds in his leg of the relay, as Ireland finished eighth in the final.
Well done on your great achievement Aaron.
Ava O’Connor Runs 15:49.65 for 5000m
Tullamore Harriers Ava O’Connor travelled to Azusa in California this week to compete in her first 5000m. Twenty-one-year-old Ava who is attending Adams State University in Colorado has had a fantastic start to her 2025 outdoor track season with PBs in 1500m and 3000m steeplechase.
At 04:00 Irish time Ava took starters orders at the Cougar Athletic Stadium. She was fast off from the start and was with the lead pack. As the laps passed, she along with two athletes from Northern Arizona University kept up a quick pace despite the 25-degree heat. The trio passed 3000m in 9:31 and the pace did not relent. Ava dug deep to hold on for third and in this her first 5000m to run 15:49.65. Her determination was evident over the last two laps which she ran in 75 and 72 seconds respectively. This means Ava has now achieved European Under 23 qualifying standards in three events- 1500m, 3000m steeplechase and 5000m. The run is also a Tullamore Harriers club record bettering Laura Mooney's 15:59 from 2024.
