A TULLAMORE man ran onto the street and “started screaming obscenities”, the September 20 sitting of Tullamore Court heard.

Belkacem Bouchentouf, 19 Arden View, Tullamore was charged with engaging in threatening behaviour and being intoxicated in public at Arden Vale Tullamore on June 2, 2023.

He had also been charged with damaging a fireproof cell blanket in Tullamore Garda Station, but this charge was withdrawn.

The Sergeant told the court that both Bouchentouf and his partner were very drunk on the evening.

“When the Gardai came across him in Arden Vale they saw that he was very intoxicated and they witnessed him running from his house out onto the street where he began shouting obscenities.”

The defending solicitor told the court that Bouchentouf's partner had suffered an injury on the evening and Bouchentouf was trying to get medical aid for her.

“His partner suffered a fall which caused a head injury,” the solicitor said. “Therefore my client was feeling distressed. He subsequently apologised to the Gardai for his behaviour. He is 52 years of age and is a French national. He has been living in Ireland for several years. He suffers from anxiety.”

The solicitor added that the plea was guilty. The solicitor asked the Judge to not convict, pointing out that Bouchentouf had €500 in the court for the Garda Benevolent Fund. The court was told that the defendant had one previous conviction.

Judge Andrew Cody commented that Bouchentouf “got his chance last year and he's back again before the court. He obviously hasn't learned his lesson. I'm therefore convicting and fining €300 for the Section 6 offence. I'll take the Section 4 into consideration.”
