After several years around the sun, our respective experiences of Christmas are firmly imprinted with memories of our childhood excitement at Christmas-past.

For those of us blessed to have fond recollections, they centre around the notion of family. Whether that's sneaking down the stairs with your siblings to see Santy’s spoils at stupid o’clock, or the antics of your least favourite aunt who’s had one too many sherries, our narratives are laden with leitmotifs and emotions. However, for the gathering of people on Saturday at Charleville Castle, we think it’s safe to say that nobody present had either envisaged Christmas 2022 in each other’s company, or in such a setting.

This time last year, the attendees at this event were strangers to each other, and most had never heard of County Offaly. Facilitated by Offaly Volunteer Centre, and in collaboration with a voluntary team from Steris, this magical congregation assembled in Tullamore’s wonderful Gothic-style edifice, decorated to the hilt for Yuletide.

The lights sparkled on the gigantic tree, the fires crackled, and the hot chocolate warmed the soul as people mingled and absorbed the enchantment of the ambience.

The embodiment of the true spirit of Christmas was palpable. Despite neither being amongst loved ones, nor having their feet on beloved home soil, we believe that Saturday, December 17 will forever be remembered by our Ukrainian friends. As for us who are blessed to call the Faithful County home for many years, we know we will hold the joy in our hearts forever.

Deirdre Fox, OVC Manager would like to take this opportunity to thank, Santa, Steris, the Charleville Castle Trust, the state accommodation providers and the voluntary community support groups from Edenderry, Tullamore, Geashill, Clonaslee, Ferbane and Clara. Just like Santy’s elves, they worked tirelessly to conjure a truly unforgettable evening.

Finally, from Deirdre and the Board of OVC, Nollaig shona agus athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh.
