VOTER turnout in the referendums this morning was low, with just 6% marking their ballots in some polling stations before noon.

At some of the boxes in Tullamore town, including two in St Joseph's National School, turnout was at 10% and 11%.

However, at Kilmurry, in the Edenderry Electoral Area, just 30 of 490 registered voters had come along before 11.30am, representing a 6% turnout.

At another rural polling station, Ballinamere, also before midday, the turnout was 6%.

Across Offaly, 58,459 people are entitled to vote in the two constitutional referendums.

Voters can mark their ballots Yes or No to questions on two proposed amendments to the Constitution, the 39th amendment of the Constitution, relating to the family and the insertion of the term “durable relationships” and the 40th amendment, relating to care provided by family members, which if carried would result in the deletion of references to mothers' and women's life and duties in the home.

The 39th amendment is on a white ballot paper and the 40th is green.
