An Offaly man was disqualified from holding a driving licence for three years during the February 14 sitting of Tullamore District Court.

Adam Austin, Newtown, Clareen, Birr, was stopped on Christmas Eve, 2023, at Wilmer Car Park, Wilmer Road , Townparks, Birr.

He was arrested for drink driving. The court was told that the quantity of alcohol, within three hours after driving, was such that the concentration of alcohol in his breath exceeded a concentration of 9 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. He had 69 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

The defending solicitor Donal Farrelly said his client works in AES, is 19 years of age and had no previous convictions. Garda Virginia Doona told the court that the defendant was very cooperative with the Gardaí after being arrested.

Judge Andrew Cody commented that the reading was “significant. It is quite a high reading for a young man. It's quite worrying.”

He convicted, fined €250, and disqualified from holding a driving licence for three years. The disqualification will come into effect in July 2024.
